2025 La Homowo Festival Ends in Triumph Despite Legal Challenges

La Shikitele hails unity and resilience as sacred rites crown a successful 2025 Homowo Festival despite failed legal disputes

The 2025 La Homowo Festival has ended on a high note, overcoming unsuccessful legal attempts to halt its celebration.

In an interview with the media, the La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, reflected on the successful conclusion of the festival, highlighted by the sacred Kpleshwemor rite — a ceremony in which the principal deity, La Kpa, is offered a bull in appreciation for its protection and blessings over the past year.

The final ceremony, marked with pageantry and reverence, drew widespread praise from townsfolk and traditional leaders. The Kpleshwemor rite, which signifies the end of Homowo, featured vibrant performances by La’s revered priests and priestesses, who danced to the rhythm of sacred drums before the ceremonial slaughter of a cow in honour of La Kpa.

“It’s not just the dancing,” the Shikitele explained. “It’s a spiritual offering — a cultural heartbeat that connects us with our ancestors.”

Nii Adjei Koofeh IV emphasized that repeated attempts to derail the festival through legal action on grounds that it cannot be celebrated in the absence of a La Mantse have consistently failed. He added that this year’s edition was particularly successful because due process and custom were upheld.

Spanning from May through September, the festival was executed with meticulous planning and strict adherence to tradition. “We put in place proper arrangements, not just for the rites but also for the governance of the town, and the results speak for themselves,” he noted.

The Shikitele, who is also the Supreme Head of the Nmati Abonase Quarter of La, further addressed the concessionary arrangement with the University of Ghana, clarifying that the reduced cut-off points granted to La indigenes are not a scholarship scheme but a concession.

As the festival closed, he issued a firm message to detractors: “We shall continue to manage the La State in accordance with custom and law, and no amount of interference will distract us.”

He concluded on a hopeful note, reaffirming his commitment to unity, tradition, and progress for the people of La.
