Islamic Clergy in Tema Hold Special Prayers, Sacrifice Ram for Bawumia Ahead of NPP Presidential Primaries

Several Islamic clerics in the Tema Metropolis have held special prayers for former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for Friday, January 31, 2026.

The spiritual exercise took place at the Tema Newtown Central Mosque, where more than twenty Imams and Islamic scholars gathered to seek divine intervention for Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the highly anticipated internal party elections.

The prayer session featured intensive recitations of verses from the Holy Quran, alongside special supplications asking for Allah’s guidance, favour and blessings for the former Vice President as delegates prepare to cast their ballots.

As part of the Islamic rites, a ram was sacrificed, in accordance with religious tradition, to further invoke Allah’s mercy and support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the polls.

Speaking to journalists after the prayers, Mohammed Pele Elias, the organiser of the event and Tema Youth Campaign Coordinator for Dr. Bawumia, explained that the spiritual exercise was aimed at committing the election process into the hands of Allah.

He expressed confidence that the prayers would yield a positive outcome, describing Dr. Bawumia as a leader with the experience, discipline and humility required to lead both the party and the nation.

Mr. Elias also used the occasion to appeal for unity and peace among supporters of all aspirants before, during and after the primaries. He stressed that maintaining party cohesion is crucial as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.

According to him, supporters of Dr. Bawumia are committed to peaceful conduct throughout the process, noting that the former Vice President possesses the humility to accept any outcome, even though his campaign remains confident of an overwhelming victory.
