Mobile telecommunications giant, MTN Ghana, has donated GH¢30,000 in cash and assorted items to the Ga Traditional Council to support this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations, reaffirming its commitment to preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage, promoting community development and strengthening partnerships with traditional institutions.
The donation, presented ahead of the annual festival, was made by MTN Ghana’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, Jemima Kotei-Walsh, on behalf of the company’s management.
The package included GH¢30,000 cash, assorted hampers, five cartons of soft drinks, GH¢2,000 worth of airtime, schnapps and other traditional items required for customary rites.
Speaking during the presentation, Ms. Kotei-Walsh said MTN Ghana recognises the importance of traditional festivals in preserving Ghana’s history, identity and values, adding that supporting cultural activities remains part of the company’s broader commitment to nation-building.
“We believe in supporting communities and celebrating festivals as part of what we do. As we prepare for this year’s Homowo Festival, it is an honour to be here on behalf of MTN Ghana to wish the people of the Ga State successful celebrations,” she said.
She explained that festivals such as Homowo provide an opportunity for communities to celebrate their heritage, promote unity and strengthen peaceful coexistence.
According to her, cultural preservation plays a significant role in national development, as communities that remain united and peaceful create the right environment for progress.
“We hope this donation will go a long way in supporting a successful celebration and bringing communities together to live peacefully because there is strength in unity. It is through peaceful and united communities that development can thrive and the nation can move forward,” she added.
Ms. Kotei-Walsh disclosed that the GH¢30,000 cash donation also symbolises MTN Ghana’s 30 years of operations in the country, representing the company’s appreciation for the support and partnership it has enjoyed from Ghanaian communities over the years.
She said MTN Ghana’s contributions to society extend beyond telecommunications services, with the company continuing to invest in initiatives focused on education, healthcare, digital inclusion and economic empowerment.
She further highlighted MTN Ghana’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion through its MobileMoney (MoMo) platform by expanding access to convenient digital financial services for individuals, businesses and underserved communities.
Ms. Kotei-Walsh noted that improving financial literacy among petty traders, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the unbanked population remains critical to empowering people to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
“We believe financial inclusion empowers businesses to grow. When people are financially empowered, communities prosper, peace is strengthened and national development is accelerated,” she said.
She added that MTN Ghana would continue to collaborate with traditional authorities and community leaders on initiatives that align with the company’s focus areas of education, health and economic empowerment.
She also announced that the company would intensify customer engagement activities during community events to educate users about its products and services, address customer concerns and raise awareness about fraud prevention to help customers protect themselves against mobile and digital scams.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ga Traditional Council, Nuumo Akwaa Mensah III, Nae Wuloomo, expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana, describing the gesture as a significant milestone in the relationship between the company and the Ga State.
He commended MTN Ghana for recognising the significance of Ghana’s cultural heritage and urged other corporate organisations to emulate the company’s example by supporting traditional institutions and cultural celebrations.
According to him, partnerships between businesses and traditional authorities contribute to national unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
He also invited MTN Ghana to actively participate in this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations and expressed the hope that the support would become an annual tradition.
He further encouraged residents and visitors expected to attend the festival to make use of MTN’s customer service points that will be stationed at strategic locations throughout the celebrations.

He said the initiative would improve customer experience during the festivities while providing an opportunity for MTN Ghana to engage directly with customers and strengthen its relationship with the people of the Ga State.
“We hope MTN will make this an annual event, supporting not only Homowo but other traditional activities within the Ga State. We appreciate this partnership and look forward to seeing it grow in the years ahead,” he said.
The Homowo Festival, celebrated annually by the Ga people, commemorates their victory over famine and remains one of Ghana’s most significant traditional festivals. The celebration brings together chiefs, residents, visitors and stakeholders to honour Ga history, culture and heritage while promoting unity and community spirit.
