This year’s Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Annual Leadership Symposium was used to honour two distinguished medical practitioners, Professor Emeritus Francis Kwesi Nkrumah, and Professor Paul Kwame Nyame for their immense contribution to medicine and public health in Ghana.
Emeritus Professor Francis Kwesi Nkrumah, is a distinguished professor of pediatrics both locally and internationally.
He is the eldest son of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and has held various positions in Ghana and abroad in the field of medicine and science.
In April 1990, he joined Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana, Legon, as Director of the Institute.
His health sector interests are health research and health development, malaria and control of tropical endemic diseases, primary health care, and child survival, and expanded programme on immunization and vaccine-preventable diseases.
He earned the title Professor Emeritus in June 2002. Professor Emeritus Nkrumah has more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Professor Emeritus Nkrumah was also a recipient of the national award, “Order of the Volta” for his immense contribution to medicine and public health in Ghana.
A citation that accompanied the award reads: Through your remarkable, dedicated, and diligent leadership, you have contributed extensively to the development of Ghana’s Health sector and the training of public health experts.
In recognition of your immense contribution to medicine and public health, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons presents you with this “Outstanding National and Global Leadership in Health Award 2023.”
Apart from his academic and professional interest in neurology (particularly epilepsy and strokes), Professor Paul Kwame Nyame was deeply involved in the medical profession by way of medical education, administration, and ethics.
He has served on several boards and committees of the University of Ghana Medical School, the University of Ghana, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and several private entities.
He first served as chairman of the Medical and Dental Council from 2000 to 2005 and currently serving a third term as chairman of the board. His tenures had seen some important policy initiatives.
A citation accompanying the award reads: An astute leader, a selfless physician, a passionate educationist, and a strong believer that ‘the African deserves the best’ are a few of your many exemplary qualities that have translated into your successful career as a health educationist, practitioner, and regulator.

Your contribution to medical education and practice is unrivaled; your dedication to medical training, coaching, and mentorship is unmatched; and your humility and principal leadership are worth emulating.
The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons presents to you its “Outstanding National and Global Leadership Health Awards 2023”.
Margaret Nkrumah, the wife of Professor Emeritus Nkrumah who received the award on his behalf because he was indisposed paid glowing tribute to the College of Physicians and Surgeons for the award.
She said the award meant a lot to him because it was coming from the College of Physicians and Surgeons and his peers.
Professor Kwame Nyame thanked College of Physicians and Surgeons for the honour done him, saying a leader must be courageous and make decisions that would benefit the people.
