Two men were detained by German police for having set fire to pieces of paper being used to remember people in Israel affected by the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7 and the ongoing war.
The papers were set alight on the steps in front of the New Synagogue in Erfurt, which were covered with candles, according to police on Sunday.
According to the state authorities, police officers temporarily detained two drunk Libyan men, but they were released again. Nobody was injured and no damage was caused to the synagogue.

According to Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier, the two suspects are Libyan asylum seekers, and a political motive was not suspected to be behind their actions.
Thuringia premier Bodo Ramelow wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter, that “anyone who seeks protection from us but disregards Jews’ right to protection can no longer claim protection.”
