Germany’s Chancellor Scholz says Israel is a safe space for Jews
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday emphasized the importance of Israel as a safe space for Jewish people, on the sidelines of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Málaga, southern Spain.
Madrid (dpa) – “And it is important, worldwide, to know that this place exists,” he said.
“That is why our solidarity with Israel must be clear. The terrible, barbaric attack by Hamas on Israeli citizens, on children, on the elderly, on young people taking part in a festival, the humiliations that were filmed there, that is something we will never accept,” Scholz continued.
At the same time, Scholz emphasized the importance that everything possible must be done to avoid an escalation of the conflict and to enable humanitarian aid for the people in the Palestinian territory.
European Social Democrats on Friday gathered in the southern Spanish city of Málaga for the 2023 Party of European Socialists (PES) Congress.
Further support for Ukraine, as well as migration and the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2027, were among various topics discussed.

Scholz emphasized the need to continue supporting Ukraine in its defence against the Russian war of aggression.
Scholz said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had broken the decades-long agreement that borders would not be moved by force. This is why it is clear: “Putin can not win,” Scholz emphasized.
To achieve this, not only must Ukraine be helped, but Europe’s defence capabilities have to be strengthened and relations with the emerging nations worldwide and the countries of the so-called global South also have to be improved.
