MTN Ghana Invests $15.6M to Boost ICT Skills for Girls Across Ghana

MTN Ghana has committed $15.6 million from 2021 to 2024 to enhance basic ICT skills in various regions of Ghana.

This substantial investment has enabled the training of 9,000 girls and 900 teachers in essential ICT skills such as coding, website design, game development, and animation.

The initiative spans multiple regions: North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, and Greater Accra. With this investment, MTN aims to bridge the digital divide, equipping young girls and educators with the necessary skills to succeed in the digital era.

Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana made this known during the National Girls in ICT Day, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation in Accra.

However, she reiterated the company’s commitment to training an additional 1,000 girls and 100 teachers this year.

“We believe in providing the benefits of a modern connected life. Connectivity and inclusion are key, and this program aims to educate girls in ICT across the country.

MTN supports leadership, inclusion, and innovation in ICT, and we will continue backing this program as long as we can,” said Wiafe.

Regarding the launch of the Girls in ICT Trust by the Ministry, Wiafe indicated MTN’s intention to engage with the Ministry to explore further support options. “We understand that the Ministry is transforming this into a Trust. We will discuss with the Ministry their plans and decide how we can continue our support,” she said.

Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, expressed gratitude to MTN and all partners for their contributions. She appealed to MTN, current partners, and potential supporters to join in and sustain the Girls in ICT programme.

“To our partners, please continue supporting us; this is an investment in future leaders. We are nurturing the next generation of women leaders. Your ongoing support is valued, and we hope to count on even more in the future,” she emphasized.

The launch of the Girls in ICT Trust aims to establish a continuous pipeline of skilled and empowered girls and women. It seeks to foster a supportive national environment for young women in ICT and STEM, ensuring sustainability beyond her tenure at the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
