Leaked: Medical Report Exposes Mahama’s Heavy Drinking Habit

John Dramani Mahama, former President of Ghana, has sought medical consultation at Summit Medical Care in New York amidst reports of persistent health concerns.

The 65-year-old statesman presented with complaints of ongoing abdominal pain and fatigue, prompting a comprehensive medical assessment.

According to the consultation note dated October 21, 2024, Mahama reported experiencing four months of intermittent abdominal pain localized in the upper right quadrant, often radiating to his back.

The pain, described as dull, is aggravated by eating and is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and persistent fatigue.

While he mentioned feeling feverish, he did not record his temperature.

The report also noted a history of heavy alcohol consumption dating back to his early 20s.

Mahama admitted to drinking regularly, consuming 1-1.75 liters of liquor on most occasions.

He characterized his drinking pattern as consistent rather than binge-related.

Physical Examination and Findings

The physical examination revealed symptoms consistent with liver dysfunction. Notable findings included mild jaundice, a distended abdomen with tenderness, hepatosplenomegaly, and signs of liver-related complications such as caput medusae and spider angiomas.

Neurological examination revealed mild asterixis, indicative of potential liver encephalopathy. Laboratory tests showed abnormal liver function tests, anemia, and prolonged clotting times, suggesting significant liver compromise.

Lifestyle Recommendations and Treatment Plan

The medical team recommended immediate lifestyle changes, including:

Gradual reduction and eventual abstinence from alcohol.

Weight management and a diet rich in protein, fiber, and essential vitamins.

Moderate aerobic exercise for at least five days per week.

The treatment plan also includes:

Medications like Naltrexone or Disulfiram to address alcohol dependency.

Prednisolone to manage hepatic inflammation.

Referrals for imaging, a liver biopsy, and counseling to address the psychological and social aspects of alcohol dependency.

Mahama was strongly cautioned against mixing alcohol with medications containing acetaminophen, which could exacerbate liver damage.

Prognosis

The prognosis was described as “guarded to poor,” with doctors warning that further liver damage could result in severe complications, including hepatic encephalopathy.

They emphasized the urgency of sustained lifestyle modifications and medical interventions to improve his condition.

Public and Political Implications

As a prominent political figure and former leader, Mahama’s health concerns have sparked widespread interest.

His role in Ghana’s political landscape remains significant, and his health will undoubtedly be a subject of national attention.

The consultation highlights the broader challenges of managing health amidst the pressures of public life.
