OFAB Empowers Bloggers on Biotechnology

In Accra, the Ghana chapter of the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) organized a workshop aimed at educating bloggers and social media influencers about biotechnology and the science behind genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The event sought to empower these digital content creators with the knowledge and tools necessary to counteract the widespread misconceptions about GMOs.

Empowering Influencers with Knowledge

Dr. Richard Ampadu-Ameyaw, the National Coordinator of OFAB, highlighted the critical role of journalists and influencers in shaping public perception.

He emphasized the need for these key communicators to have a solid understanding of GMOs and biotechnology to ensure that the information they disseminate is factual and not fear-inducing.

“It is essential for you to seek more knowledge about GMOs so you can spread factual information,” Dr. Ampadu-Ameyaw urged the participants, stressing the importance of responsible communication in an age of rampant misinformation.

Reassuring the Public on GMO Safety

During the workshop, Mr. Daniel Osei Ofosu from the Biotechnology Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission reassured the influencers about the safety of GMOs, citing extensive research by reputable organizations like the World Health Organisation (WHO). He urged influencers to be cautious about the content they share, given their substantial reach and influence.
