The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed credible reports of nefarious activities involving Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, allegedly designed to rig the upcoming December 7 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the NDC, Brigadier-General Opoku has been tasked by President Akufo-Addo to oversee a well-coordinated scheme to manipulate the election results, particularly in the Ashanti region, through ballot stuffing, box swapping, altering pink sheets, and other covert operations starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2nd.
The NDC claims, “Our credible intelligence reports that Brigadier-General Opoku’s residence in Kumasi is currently being used as a storage facility for weapons, illegally printed ballot papers, military uniforms, and other election materials, which the NPP plans to use to execute this subversive agenda.”
Additionally, the NDC asserts that Opoku is responsible for training NPP operatives at the Asutsuare Military Camp and other locations, intending to equip them with military apparel and deploy them to intimidate NDC agents and supporters on election day.
Currently serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, a position he assumed in July 2024, Brigadier-General Opoku’s actions have raised significant concern.
Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, stated that Opoku, who has relocated his family to the United Kingdom, is determined to carry out the election-rigging plot in exchange for a promotion to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) if the NPP wins the 2024 elections.
“We wish to serve notice to Brigadier-General Opoku and his collaborators in the NPP that we are closely monitoring their activities. This time, they will not succeed. Violence will not win the NPP the election this year,” Gyamfi declared.
The NDC is calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), who chairs the Elections Security Task Force, to ensure that no individual undermines his authority. They also stressed the importance of bringing justice to the eight Ghanaians killed during the 2020 elections, including those killed in broad daylight at Techiman South.
The NDC has urged the IGP and the Elections Security Task Force to thoroughly investigate this alleged election-rigging plot and prevent Brigadier-General Opoku and his associates from executing another violent strategy like the Techiman South killings.
“We expect the IGP to remain firm and fair, ensuring peace during and after the elections,” Gyamfi added, assuring the IGP of the NDC’s cooperation. The party has also called on the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate the matter and hold Brigadier-General Opoku accountable.
The NDC emphasized that it will hold the IGP, the Chief of Defence Staff, and other security heads responsible for any loss of life during the 2024 elections. “Elections are about counting heads, not cutting heads,” said Gyamfi. “No one should lose their life for the sake of elections. We must all join hands to condemn those who seek to undermine free, fair, and peaceful elections.”
While the NDC commended the professionalism of most security personnel, it expressed concern over Brigadier-General Opoku, who they accused of turning into a staunch NPP supporter, mobilizing funds for the party from businesspeople. The NDC is confident that Ghanaians will vote for change on December 7, choosing experienced leader John Dramani Mahama over the NPP’s Alhaji Bawumia.
As the NPP faces looming defeat, the NDC believes the ruling party has resorted to dark tactics, including ballot stuffing, box swapping, and other fraudulent activities, with the help of dangerous collaborators like Brigadier-General Opoku and Lt. Colonel Nyarko Osae, the 2BN Commanding Officer.
