Vivo Energy Ghana in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority and Health Nexus Network has jointly launched “Fit2Drive” wellness initiative for commercial drivers.
The “Fit2Drive” wellness programme aims to promote and enhance the physical and mental well-being of commercial drivers, ensuring they maintain optimal health and safety standards while on the road.
Speaking at the launch of wellness-inspired programme in Accra on behalf of Kader Maiga, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Joseph Kankam, the Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, said investing in the wellness of the country’s drivers is fundamental in promoting road safety.
Kader Maiga adds that “by focusing on physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall health, we strive to create a community of safer and healthier drivers.
To our hardworking drivers gathered here, we recognize that the demands of the job can take a toll on your health and wellness. Hence, we have designed a comprehensive wellness programme that includes health screening, fitness training, and educational seminars among others as part of the programme.
By promoting a culture of holistic wellness, we hope to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness among commercial drivers.
Through the “Fit2Drive” wellness programme, we aim to reduce the risks associated with fatigue, stress, and other health-related factors that could compromise the safety of our roads.”
Beyond the screening, advocacy, and education, the Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, said the company as part of the “Fit2Drive” wellness programme would liaise with transport unions to organise fitness sessions for drivers at selected bus terminals.
These sessions according to him, would help to enhance the driver’s physical and mental well-being, reducing the risk of accidents caused by fatigue or health-related issues.
Regular exercise, he explained, can improve alertness, reaction times, and overall physical capabilities, making drivers more responsive and resilient on the road.
Additionally, Kader Maiga said promoting healthy lifestyles through fitness sessions can contribute to long-term wellness, reducing the likelihood of chronic health conditions that may impair driving abilities.
He said “The Fit2Drive wellness programme initiative serves as a testament to our commitment to the safety of all road users. I urge all stakeholders, including drivers, fleet operators and regulatory agencies to join hands in supporting this initiative and its mission.
Together, let us prioritize the well-being of our drivers, ensuring that they are physically and mentally fit to navigate our roads safely.”
Dr. Ofori-Boadu, the Acting Director in charge of the Institutional Care Division, Ghana Health Service on his part, said his outfit has wellness clinics across the country to promote healthy living among Ghanaians.
He therefore called on drivers to advantage of the facility and spend 30 minutes of their time at the health facility for medical examination before going to work.
Ernest Nyame Annan of the Red Cross Society in his delivery urged drivers to relax when they are tired and stop taking needless painkillers but rather go to the hospital for medical checkups
He appealed to drivers to make it a habit to have first aid boxes in their vehicles, saying road safety is not just a priority but a shared responsibility.
