WASSCE Leakages Is Becoming Rampant – NDC Expresses Worry

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus has expressed serious worry about the continuous leakages of West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers within some few years now.

According to the NDC, the situation raises a lot of concerns and the need to halt it to safe the quality of education and certificates issued at that level.

“We have been observing leakages of exam questions for some time now, and the past three or four years show that it is becoming rampant. Why WAEC is not doing much about it, we are at a loss,” the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe told JoyFM.

In respect of this, the Ranking Member indicated that the Minister for Education and officials of the West African Examination Council are expected to appear before Parliament to answer questions on recent leakages of the exams papers.

“I said that we will haul the Minister for Education and WAEC before Parliament. As of last Friday, I filed an urgent question that on resumption of Parliament, next month, the Minister for Education must appear before the house to answer a number of questions,” he added.

The Ranking Member on Education pointed out that he cannot fathom why there should be leakage of exams papers this year after the assurance from WAEC that the necessary measures have been put in place to curtail such occurrences.

“Maybe at the end, the Speaker may give a directive that they (WAEC) should meet the Education Committee or a Parliamentary Committee should be formed to investigate the matter and report,” Mr. Peter Nortsu said.

He urged WAEC not to shield persons found culpable of contributing to the leakages in the exams papers to save the credibility of the exams.

This, the Ranking Member said could prevent future leakages of the WASSCE exams papers.
“When you [WAEC] do the investigations, name, and shame the culprits so that it can deter others from engaging in such activities,” Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director for Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare says his outfit has written to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to probe the cause of question leakages in the ongoing WASSCE.

Speaking through the same medium the Executive Director further stated that the examination body is “a bit charitable with the actual situation on the ground because its image is at stake.”

“It’s unfortunate. But that is why we have petitioned the Director-General of the CID to investigate the source of these questions,” he added.
