HRRG condemns assault on JoyNews reporter Latif Iddrisu, demands justice

In a disturbing incident on May 25, 2025, JoyNews journalist Latif Iddrisu was brutally assaulted while reporting on corruption allegations at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has issued a strong condemnation of the attack, calling it a grave violation of press freedom and human rights.

“This assault is an attack on the core principles of a free press that holds power accountable,” Iddrisu stated, standing firm in his dedication to journalism despite the traumatic experience.

The assault, carried out by unidentified individuals, underscores the growing risks journalists face in Ghana.

HRRG emphasizes that press freedom, safeguarded under Article 162 of Ghana’s Constitution, is non-negotiable.

The organization demands an immediate and transparent investigation by the Ghanaian authorities, urging the Inspector General of Police and President John Dramani Mahama to ensure swift justice for those responsible.

The incident is part of a troubling pattern, with the Media Foundation for West Africa reporting at least five assaults on journalists in Ghana over the past year.

HRRG calls on political leaders, civil society, media houses, and citizens to unite against this rising wave of violence and intimidation targeting the media.

In support of Iddrisu and his family, HRRG pledges to closely monitor the case and work with stakeholders to advocate for justice and stronger protections for journalists.

A free and safe press is vital to Ghana’s democracy. HRRG’s call to action is a powerful reminder that protecting journalists is essential to upholding the nation’s democratic values.
