HRRG’s advocacy sparks rapid police action in homophobic attack and journalist assault

Justice in Motion: Human Rights Reporters Ghana commends police for swift intervention

Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has lauded the Ghana Police Service for their quick response to recent human rights violations—a brutal homophobic attack in Kumasi and an assault on a journalist in Accra—following timely press statements and widespread public concern.

Under the leadership of Inspector-General Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the police moved swiftly to arrest suspects in both cases, demonstrating a robust commitment to justice.

This decisive action was largely in response to HRRG’s immediate public appeals, which helped galvanize both civil society and law enforcement efforts.

Advocacy in Action

It was HRRG’s prompt and courageous advocacy that first drew national attention to Kofi, a young man who survived a heinous homophobic attack in Atonsu, Kumasi. Their efforts galvanized support and pushed authorities to act swiftly, ensuring Kofi’s safety and the mobilization of necessary medical and protective services.

“His safety and recovery are paramount,” HRRG emphasized. “Justice must follow for everyone responsible for this cruel act.”

Defending Press Freedom

Similarly, HRRG’s strong condemnation of the violent assault on Latif Iddrisu, a JoyNews journalist attacked at the EOCO Headquarters in Accra, played a vital role in maintaining pressure for justice. While one suspect has been arrested, HRRG insists that full accountability and thorough investigations must be pursued.

“This isn’t just about Latif,” the organization stated. “It’s about safeguarding press freedom, which is fundamental to our democracy.”

From Advocacy to Impact

These recent developments underscore HRRG’s reputation as a frontline force for justice in Ghana. Their advocacy is not merely symbolic but strategic and results-oriented.

“We don’t issue statements just for headlines,” said HRRG Executive Director, Dr. Joseph Wemakor. “We speak truth to power and remain committed until concrete action is taken. That is what meaningful advocacy truly looks like.”

A Call for Continued Vigilance

While HRRG praises the police for their swift response, the organization urges law enforcement to sustain their efforts and ensure justice is consistently delivered, regardless of gender, identity, or profession.

As a dedicated media and human rights organization, HRRG continues to lead with unwavering commitment, reminding the nation that human dignity and justice are non-negotiable rights that must be fiercely protected.
