As part of sustained efforts to promote environmental sustainability and appreciation of nature, the MTN Media Republic, in collaboration with the Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS), has organised a bird and butterfly walk at the Legon Botanical Gardens.
The exercise, held on Saturday, August 29, brought together media practitioners and environmental enthusiasts for an educative and interactive session aimed at deepening understanding of biodiversity and the need for environmental protection.
The walk was led by the Executive Director of the Ghana Wildlife Society, Dr Sandra Owusu-Gyamfi, who called on Ghanaians to reduce their reliance on plastics and adopt environmentally friendly alternatives in homes, offices and public spaces.
She warned that plastic waste, particularly microplastics, poses a grave threat to marine life and the wider ecosystem, and stressed the need for individuals, businesses and institutions to take deliberate steps to tackle plastic pollution.
Dr Owusu-Gyamfi also highlighted the importance of birds, describing them as unique creatures whose freedom and way of life offer important lessons on coexistence with nature.
She encouraged participants to develop a deeper appreciation for birds and other wildlife, noting that protecting biodiversity is a collective responsibility.

Speaking at the event, Acting General Manager for Sustainability at MTN Ghana, Mrs Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, said the walk formed part of the company’s Sustainability Month activities.
She described it as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and strengthen relationships among colleagues and media partners.
She said the experience of breathing fresh air, listening to birds chirp and being surrounded by nature was refreshing and therapeutic.
“The feeling is healing, and we feel good doing small actions to create big impact,” she stated.
Mrs Fiagbenu explained that MTN is translating its sustainability commitments into action through initiatives such as the installation of solar panels at its offices and the MTN House, as well as waste recycling programmes underpinned by strong governance and ethical standards.
Senior Manager for Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, Ms Efua Falconer, said MTN, as an innovative organisation, continues to align with emerging global trends and is keen to carry its media partners along in initiatives that promote sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

President of the MTN Media Republic, Naa Dzagble Ago Quaye, commended members for participating in the walk, describing it as educative, interactive, exotic, inspiring and physically beneficial.
She said the exercise offered members a break from their routine schedules while deepening their understanding of the need to protect Ghana’s rich biodiversity.
The bird and butterfly walk allowed participants to observe various species in their natural habitat while learning about conservation and responsible environmental stewardship.
It also provided a relaxed platform for networking and shared learning, further strengthening the relationship between MTN and the media community.
Organisers expressed optimism that the experience would inspire participants to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles and become advocates for the protection of Ghana’s natural environment.
