Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect national officers capable of uniting the party, rebuilding its structures and positioning it for victory in the 2028 general election.
Addressing the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, Nana Akufo-Addo described the gathering as a critical stage in the party’s reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 elections.
“This gathering represents an important step in our party’s reorganisation,” he said.
The former President said the national officers elected at the conference would have the responsibility of working closely with the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and its parliamentary candidates to prepare the NPP for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He stressed that rebuilding the party would require a strong national leadership capable of strengthening its structures from the grassroots to the national level.
The former President urged delegates to rise above individual and sectional interests and choose officers capable of restoring unity and confidence within the party.
“I am confident that guided by the theme, ‘One Party, One Purpose, United for Victory’, the delegates will rise above the sectional interests and elect leadership capable of uniting our ranks and rebuilding our fortunes at every level, from the polling station to the presidency,” he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo acknowledged that returning the NPP to power would not be an easy task and would require commitment, sacrifice and loyalty from party members.
“It will be an arduous task which will demand of us all our energy, time, determination, and loyalty,” he stated.
Despite the challenge, the former President expressed confidence that the NPP could rebuild and return to government in 2028 under the leadership of Dr Bawumia.
He drew parallels with the party’s electoral victories in 2000 and 2016, when the NPP returned to power after periods in opposition.
“I believe, however, that with God’s guidance we will emerge victorious as we did in 2000 and 2016 and form a government under the leadership of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that will promote the rule of law and the welfare of the good people of Ghana in line with our motto of development in freedom,” he said.
His remarks reinforced earlier calls for unity and stronger grassroots organisation as the NPP seeks to rebuild its political machinery ahead of the next general election.
Nana Akufo-Addo also reaffirmed his commitment to the party and wished delegates a successful conference.
“I convey my best wishes for a successful conference. I remain as always a committed servant of this great party and our beloved nation, Ghana,” he stated.
The NPP National Delegates Conference has brought together more than 7,000 delegates from across the country to elect national officers who will steer the affairs of the opposition party for the next four years.
The conference is also considering proposed amendments to the NPP constitution as part of the party’s wider restructuring ahead of the 2028 elections.
