The Assembly Member for the Oforikrom Electoral Area, Hon. Amankwa Emmanuel, has commended the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suhum, Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, for initiating key educational and sanitation projects aimed at improving infrastructure and the wellbeing of residents in the Oforikrom electoral area and the municipality at large.
On Tuesday September 8, 2026, the MCE cut sod for the construction of a new three-unit JHS block at Suhum Oforikrom Ghanata JHS to replace the existing old school block, which has been in a deplorable state for years.
The new facility will comprise three classrooms, a staff common room, a four-seater toilet facility, borehole and other ancillary facilities, providing pupils and teachers with a safer and more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The poor condition of the existing block had become a major concern for the school community, with teaching and learning sometimes disrupted during rainfall.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Amankwa, an old student of the school and former School Prefect of the 2004 batch, expressed his excitement about the intervention, noting that the school had endured infrastructure challenges for many years.
“Today is a happy day for me and the people of Oforikrom. God bless our MCE for this beautiful gesture because the school has been in a deplorable state for a very long time. We spoke to our MCE about the deplorable state of the school, she listened and has walked the talk to do this for us because this school has brought a lot of people up,” he said.
According to him, the school, which was established in the 1990s, had deteriorated over the years to the extent that students sometimes had to close when it rained.
He explained that Suhum Ghanata JHS has played an important role in education within the Suhum township, serving as a continuation school for pupils from primary schools that did not have Junior High School facilities.
As a result, generations of students from different parts of Suhum have passed through the school, making the replacement of the old classroom block a significant intervention for the community.
“I’m happy today, and I thank the MCE and her team for putting up a new block for us at Oforikrom,” Hon. Amankwa added.
As part of the day’s activities, Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah also cut sod for the paving of the Suhum Ayekotse Urban Council premises and the construction of a new four-seater toilet facility.
The project is expected to improve the condition of the public space while enhancing sanitation and hygiene within the Nartey Anomah electoral area.
Speaking to the media after the ceremonies, Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah said Suhum Ghanata JHS has served the people of Suhum for many years, but the condition of its existing infrastructure had become unacceptable.
She said the Assembly therefore considered it necessary to replace the old and deteriorated JHS block with a new facility that would provide a better environment for pupils and teachers.
On the Ayekotse Urban Council premises, the MCE noted that the area hosts numerous events, but its current condition is not encouraging. She said the Assembly intends to pave the entire area and construct stores around it to help protect and improve the facility.
“These projects are a testament to our ongoing efforts to build a better Suhum together. We are committed to investing in education, health and sanitation, the pillars of a thriving community.
We believe that by improving our infrastructure, we are creating opportunities for growth and prosperity for everyone in Suhum,” she stated.
The sod-cutting ceremonies formed part of a series of activities being undertaken by the Suhum Municipal Assembly to demonstrate its focus on essential sectors, particularly education, health and sanitation.
Other ongoing projects include the Adarkwa CHPS Compound and Nurses’ Quarters; the Bono Densuso KG Block, Staff Common Room, Kids Eatery and four-seater WC toilet facility; and the Nankese Amanfrom CHPS Compound, among other interventions.
The Suhum Municipal Assembly says it remains committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure residents have access to quality infrastructure and essential services.
With the replacement of the dilapidated Suhum Ghanata JHS block and other projects now underway, the Assembly hopes to improve learning conditions, healthcare delivery, sanitation and public infrastructure across the municipality.
