President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct airstrips in every region without an airport to improve emergency air travel and facilitate medical evacuations across Ghana.
The President disclosed the initiative during a courtesy call by chiefs from the Western North Region, identifying the region as one of the beneficiaries.
He explained that the proposed facilities would provide landing sites for aircraft during emergencies, particularly in areas where the absence of airports could delay urgent medical transfers.
Under the plan, each airstrip would measure approximately two kilometres in length and include a small control office to support aircraft landings.
President Mahama clarified that regions with existing airports would not require additional facilities, while those without airports would receive the new infrastructure.
The initiative is expected to strengthen emergency response and improve access to air transport for medical evacuations and other urgent needs nationwide.
