The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged Ghanaians not to panic or rush to exchange their existing cedi notes following the introduction of the upgraded Heritage Series banknotes.
He assured the public that existing banknotes remain valid and can be used alongside the upgraded notes for everyday transactions.
Speaking at the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Dr Asiama explained that the introduction of the Heritage Series was intended to enhance the security, durability and functionality of Ghana’s currency.
He said the upgraded notes incorporate improved security features to protect the integrity of the cedi while showcasing the country’s cultural identity and national heritage.
“The public should therefore continue to use the existing banknotes alongside the upgraded notes,” he stated.
Dr Asiama also called for greater public responsibility in preserving the quality of Ghana’s currency, stressing that proper handling of banknotes was essential to reducing replacement costs.
He expressed concern about practices such as writing on banknotes, stapling, crumpling, spraying money at social events and using currency notes for decorative purposes.
According to him, such practices damage banknotes, shorten their lifespan and increase the cost of currency management.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the integrity of our currency is not the responsibility of the Bank of Ghana alone. It is a shared national responsibility,” he emphasised.
The Governor urged businesses, traders, financial institutions and the general public to adopt responsible currency-handling practices.
“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes, reduce replacement costs, and support efficient currency management,” he added.
The Bank of Ghana maintained that the Heritage Series forms part of efforts to strengthen confidence in the national currency while ensuring that banknotes remain secure, durable and reflective of Ghana’s identity.
