The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has postponed the launch of its upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, to November 12, 2026.
The new banknotes, originally expected to be introduced earlier in November, will come with improved security features, greater durability and updated designs that reflect Ghana’s history, culture and national identity.
The Heritage Series will maintain the existing denominations of GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200.
Speaking at a forum in Accra on Monday, November 2, 2026, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, explained that the new banknotes would circulate alongside the existing notes, which would remain legal tender.
He assured the public that there was no need to rush to banks to exchange their money, as the introduction of the Heritage Series would not make the current notes invalid.
Why the Bank of Ghana Is Introducing New Notes
The Bank of Ghana says the upgrade is intended to strengthen the security of the national currency and address challenges associated with the prolonged use of banknotes.
The new series will feature advanced security measures to make counterfeiting more difficult, while improvements in the quality of the notes are expected to help them last longer in circulation.
Beyond security, the designs will highlight Ghana’s cultural heritage, national heroes and identity.
The changes are also expected to make currency management more efficient and reduce the long-term cost of replacing worn-out banknotes.
Existing Cedi Notes Remain Valid
Dr Asiama emphasised that the introduction of the Heritage Series does not mean Ghanaians must immediately exchange their existing banknotes.
Both the new and current notes will remain in circulation, allowing the public to continue using their money for everyday transactions without disruption.
The Governor therefore urged individuals and businesses to remain calm and avoid unnecessary withdrawals or exchanges ahead of the launch.
Official Launch Set for November 12
The Bank of Ghana is expected to officially unveil the Heritage Series at Bank Square in Accra on Thursday, November 12, 2026.
Ahead of the launch, the central bank is expected to provide further information on how the new banknotes will be introduced into circulation.
The move forms part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s currency, improve its security and ensure that banknotes remain durable and reliable for everyday transactions.
