Soldiers on border patrol rescue accident victim in Widana

Troops on routine border security operations in the Upper East Region suspend patrol to provide life-saving aid and evacuate injured woman to hospital.

Soldiers from the 11 Mechanized Battalion halted their long-range border patrol on Thursday, midway in Widana, in the Pusiga District, to rescue a civilian who had sustained serious injuries in a motorcycle accident.

The soldiers, led by their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Boako; the General Officer Commanding Northern Command, Brigadier General Worlanyo Agbebo; and the Northern Command Operations Officer, Colonel J. Y. Kwarteng, were conducting routine patrols along the Kulungugu–Pusiga–Pulmankom borderline in the Upper East Region when they encountered the victim in severe distress.

She had reportedly fallen off her motorcycle along with her child and suffered deep cuts and other injuries. Community members had gathered helplessly, as there was no vehicle available to transport her to a health facility.

Without hesitation, the soldiers halted their movement upon reaching the scene and deployed their medical team to administer first aid. After stabilising her condition, they arranged for her to be transported in a waiting military ambulance to Blessings Hospital in Pulmankom for further medical attention.

Residents who witnessed the incident praised the soldiers for their swift intervention and humanitarian gesture, describing their actions as a demonstration of professionalism and compassion.

The border patrols form part of sustained efforts by the Ghana Armed Forces to dismantle suspected sleeper cells and strengthen security along Ghana’s borders with Burkina Faso and Togo amid threats of violent extremism in the sub-region.

Troops, mounted on motorbikes and supported by vehicles, regularly conduct such patrols while engaging local communities.

They also sensitise residents on the importance of providing credible information about suspicious activities that could threaten national security.
