MTN Ghana has completed what its Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson, describes as an “extraordinary front nine” in its 30-year journey, with the telecommunications giant now setting its sights on a new era of fibre expansion, 5G, artificial intelligence and deeper digital inclusion.
Dr Yamson said the company’s achievements over the past three decades had been built on resilience, discipline, consistency and the ability to recover from challenges, stressing that those qualities would be even more critical as MTN enters the next phase of its operations in Ghana.
He made the remarks at the MTN Ghana 30th Anniversary CEO Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Achimota Golf Club on Saturday.
Drawing parallels between golf and MTN Ghana’s three-decade journey, Dr Yamson said both were long games in which success depended not on one spectacular moment but on patience, sound judgment, consistency and the ability to recover from setbacks.
He said golf had taught him an important lesson that extended beyond the course — a round could not be won on the first hole.
Success, he explained, required navigating all 18 holes with discipline, adjusting to changing conditions and remaining focused on the ultimate goal.
“That, ladies and gentlemen, is also the story of MTN Ghana,” he said.
From Humble Beginnings to Over 30 Million Subscribers
Reflecting on MTN Ghana’s beginnings three decades ago, Dr Yamson said there was no certainty the company would grow to serve more than 30 million subscribers, that mobile money would become a lifeline for millions of Ghanaians or that fibre connectivity would eventually reach homes and communities across the country.
MTN, he said, simply took its stance, addressed the challenge before it and played the best shot it could.
The journey, however, had not been without difficulties.
Using golfing terminology, Dr Yamson said the company had encountered its share of “regulatory bunkers, competitive hazards and unexpected storms”, forcing it at various stages to reassess and adjust its approach.
“A good golfer does not abandon the round because of one bad hole,” he said.
“Success comes from something deeper. It comes from consistency. It comes from judgment, from learning from mistakes, from recovering when things do not go according to plan, and perhaps most importantly, from staying the course.”
MTN Eyes Fibre, 5G and AI in ‘Back Nine’
Dr Yamson said MTN Ghana could look back proudly on an “extraordinary front nine” characterised by expanded telecommunications services, stronger community connectivity, business empowerment, increased financial inclusion and significant contributions to Ghana’s digital transformation.
He stressed, however, that the company’s 30th anniversary should not be regarded as the end of the journey.
Instead, it marked the beginning of what he called MTN Ghana’s “back nine” — a new phase that would bring fresh opportunities and challenges requiring greater innovation and adaptability.
“Our back nine is already before us, bringing new opportunities and challenges, nationwide fibre expansion, the promise of 5G, artificial intelligence, greater innovation and a deeper, more sustainable partnership with the communities we serve,” he said.
Dr Yamson said the company remained committed to reaching communities still awaiting stronger connectivity and greater access to digital opportunities.
He stressed that MTN Ghana would pursue its next phase with the same discipline, resilience and integrity that had sustained the company over the past three decades.
Yamson Credits Customers, Employees and Partners
The Board Chairman also credited MTN Ghana’s success to the collective contribution of employees, customers, regulators and business partners.
He paid tribute to employees who had built and maintained the network, customer service personnel who supported subscribers, regulators who challenged the company to improve and business partners who had contributed to its growth.
He also acknowledged millions of Ghanaian customers who had continued to place their trust in the company.
According to him, MTN Ghana’s 30-year story was ultimately one of partnership and collective achievement.
Achimota Golf Club Hails MTN
President of the Achimota Golf Club, Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah, congratulated MTN Ghana on its 30th anniversary and praised the company’s contribution to Ghana’s digital landscape.
He said MTN Ghana’s achievements had been built not only on technology but also on trust and strong relationships.
“Technology can connect devices. Networks can connect places. But ultimately, it is trust and relationships that connect people,” he said.
Mr Amoafo-Yeboah thanked MTN Ghana for choosing the Achimota Golf Club for the anniversary tournament and expressed optimism that the partnership between the two organisations would continue to grow.
Duvor Tops Men’s Group A
About 120 golfers from clubs across Ghana participated in the 18-hole tournament, which brought together corporate leaders, business executives and golf enthusiasts.
Frederick Semenu Duvor emerged champion of the Men’s Group A category with 39 points, while Julienne Afri won the Ladies’ Group A title with the same score.
Yaw Mireku Jnr. produced one of the tournament’s standout performances, winning Men’s Group B with 45 points, while Kous Louanges Mang claimed the Ladies’ Group B title with 38 points.
Kofi Mangesi won Men’s Group C with 40 points after edging Derrick Morgan on countback, while Elorm R. Akuash Bonney claimed the Ladies’ Group C title with 42 points.
In the Seniors Division, Jan Vogel won the men’s category with 39 gross, while Helen Appah topped the ladies’ category with 44 gross.
The tournament combined sporting competition and corporate networking with reflections on MTN Ghana’s three decades of operations and its ambitions for the next phase of Ghana’s digital transformation.
