The Concerned Youth of Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region has rejected claims by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi West, Eric Afful, that there are no illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the Sambrei area.
In a statement issued on August 2, 2026, the youth group described the MP’s assertion as inaccurate, insisting that illegal mining activities continue to take place in and around Samreboi.
The group said active galamsey operations are ongoing near the heart of the community, particularly around an area known as China Road.
According to the statement, the effects of illegal mining have already resulted in tragic consequences, including the death of a young man about three months ago at one of the mining sites.
The youth group said the incident led to protests by some young people in the area, who expressed their dissatisfaction over the circumstances surrounding the death.
“These incidents are well known to residents and have been widely discussed within the community,” the statement said.
The group expressed surprise at the MP’s comments, arguing that the alleged illegal mining activities were known within the community and should not be denied.
The Concerned Youth of Samreeboi also referenced reports by journalist Osotoba Saah Ezekiel of Greengold FM/TV, based in Samreboi, which they said provided further information on alleged illegal mining activities involving the area.
The youth group called on the MP and relevant authorities to acknowledge the existence of illegal mining challenges and work with residents to address the situation.
“As concerned citizens, we believe that acknowledging the existence of the problem is the first step toward finding a lasting solution,” the statement said.
They urged stakeholders to prioritise efforts to combat illegal mining rather than dismiss concerns raised by community members.
The statement was signed by Emmanuel Appiah Larbi, President of the Concerned Youth of Samreboi, Sulemana Luqman, Secretary, and Tweneboah Godwin, Public Relations Officer.
