Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has been admitted as a Full Member of the World Patients Alliance (WPA), strengthening the organisation’s growing engagement in human rights, health advocacy and patient empowerment.
The membership was approved by the Board of Directors of the World Patients Alliance and formally communicated to HRRG following the successful consideration of its application.
HRRG has described the development as an important milestone that will enable the organisation to further connect its human rights advocacy work with global efforts aimed at strengthening patient voices and promoting access to quality, safe and patient-centred healthcare.
The World Patients Alliance is a global organisation committed to strengthening and amplifying the voices of patients and patient organisations. Its work focuses on patient empowerment and engagement, improved access to healthcare, safe and innovative treatment, and patient-centred healthcare.
Through its international network, WPA creates opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and advocacy among patient organisations and other stakeholders working to improve healthcare and ensure that patients have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their health and wellbeing.
HRRG Links Human Rights and Healthcare
HRRG’s admission into the World Patients Alliance comes as the organisation continues to expand its advocacy work around human rights, social justice and community empowerment.
The organisation believes that access to quality healthcare and respect for human dignity are essential elements of the human rights agenda.
According to HRRG, patients should not be treated merely as recipients of healthcare services but should have opportunities to participate meaningfully in decisions and policies affecting their health and wellbeing.
The membership therefore provides an opportunity for HRRG to strengthen its work at the intersection of human rights, healthcare, media advocacy, social justice and community engagement.
Focus on Patient Voices
HRRG said its membership of the WPA aligns with its commitment to ensuring that the voices of vulnerable and marginalised communities are heard and recognised in public discussions and policymaking.
The organisation said it looks forward to contributing to conversations around patient rights, patient empowerment, healthcare access, inclusion and human dignity.
“Healthcare is a human right, and every patient deserves to be heard, respected and treated with dignity,” HRRG said.
The organisation further noted that meaningful patient participation is important to developing healthcare systems that are responsive, inclusive and centred on the needs of the people they serve.
Opportunities for Collaboration
As a Full Member of the World Patients Alliance, HRRG will have opportunities to engage with fellow members, patient organisations, civil society organisations and other stakeholders working to advance patient rights and healthcare globally.
HRRG said it intends to contribute its experience in human rights reporting, advocacy, public education and community engagement while also learning from other organisations within the WPA network.
The organisation expressed its appreciation to the Board of Directors and the entire World Patients Alliance team for welcoming HRRG into the global alliance.
The new membership adds to HRRG’s growing engagement with regional and international networks working in the areas of human rights, social justice, inclusion and sustainable development.
