Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned that persistent internal divisions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could undermine its chances of returning to presidential and parliamentary power.
According to the Effutu Member of Parliament, one of the major differences between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is the latter’s ability to quickly close ranks and mobilise its members around a common objective despite internal disagreements.
Speaking on Asaasepa FM, Afenyo-Markin said the NDC may have internal challenges, including disagreements among its Majority caucus in Parliament, but its members demonstrate greater cohesion when collective action is required.
“The difference is, NDC is able to come together and get collective easily. I see a lot of problems among them in the Majority in Parliament because of where I sit. I really see it. However, the moment the bell is rung, they all come together as if there’s no problem,” he said.
He argued that the situation is different within the NPP, where disagreements often become visible and aggrieved members may remain disengaged even when the party needs them to rally behind a common cause.
“If it were the NPP members of Parliament, everyone would see the division. The [aggrieved] member would not come around even if you whip them. That is our weakness,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin cautioned that the NPP must confront this weakness and develop a stronger culture of reconciliation and collective action if it intends to regain political power.

He said the party has significant individual talent but must harness those strengths into a united force capable of producing the political impact required to win elections.
“We need to work on these so that the individual talents we have would have that collective power to achieve [maximum] impact. And that impact is what will bring us power,” he said.
