MTN Ghana has intensified its environmental sustainability drive by taking employees inside the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant to experience firsthand how waste is processed, recycled and converted into useful products.
The initiative, held as part of the company’s 2026 Sustainability Month, is aimed at turning environmental awareness into practical action by encouraging employees to adopt responsible waste-management practices at work, at home and within their communities.
The visit exposed employees to the full waste-management cycle, from collection and segregation to processing and recycling, highlighting the environmental and economic value that can be created from materials that would otherwise end up as waste.
MTN Ghana said the exercise forms part of a broader strategy to embed sustainability into its operations and encourage employees, customers and other stakeholders to recognise how individual actions can collectively make a significant environmental impact.

The company is marking Sustainability Month under the theme, “Building a Sustainable Future Together: Small Actions, Big Impact.”
MTN Pushes Employees to Champion Green Action
Speaking during the tour, Acting General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Ghana, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, said protecting the environment required deliberate action from both businesses and individuals.
She said MTN Ghana was seeking to move sustainability beyond corporate commitments by encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour among its employees.
“At MTN Ghana, we believe that creating a sustainable future requires intentional action from both organisations and individuals. While technology continues to connect people and enable progress, we must also take responsibility for protecting the environment that sustains us all,” she said.
According to her, exposing employees directly to waste processing and recycling would help them better understand the consequences of waste disposal and the importance of responsible consumption.
“This visit provides our employees with practical exposure to how responsible waste management contributes to environmental preservation and sustainable development,” she added.
Mrs Asare Fiagbenu said MTN Ghana had already introduced measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations, including waste segregation and the elimination of single-use plastics within its offices.

But the company wants the impact of those initiatives to extend beyond its workplaces.
“We hope that the sustainable practices we promote within our workplaces will influence behaviours at home and within the communities where our employees live and work,” she said.
Recycling Plant Urges Collective Action
Plant Manager of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, Ing. Malik Kablah Ganyo, welcomed MTN Ghana’s decision to expose its workforce to practical waste-management and recycling processes.
He said environmental protection could not be left to governments or waste-management companies alone, stressing that businesses and individuals had important roles to play.
“Environmental sustainability can only be achieved when organisations and individuals work together,” he said.
He noted that initiatives that expose people to the realities of waste management were critical to driving the behavioural changes needed to safeguard the environment.
Employees Get Firsthand Look at Waste Challenge
For employees who participated in the tour, the exercise provided an opportunity to see what happens to waste after it leaves homes and workplaces.
MTN Ghana employee Believe Nutsuga said the experience had deepened his understanding of recycling and reinforced the importance of properly separating waste before disposal.
“The visit has given me a deeper appreciation of what happens to waste after disposal and the effort involved in recycling it,” he said.
“It has demonstrated the importance of proper waste segregation and motivated me to be more intentional about the way I manage waste both at work and at home.”
The company hopes such exposure will help employees become sustainability advocates capable of influencing environmental practices within their families and communities.
MTN Deepens ‘Doing for Planet’ Agenda
The initiative forms part of MTN Ghana’s “Doing for Planet” pillar under its Sustainability Framework, which focuses on addressing environmental challenges, promoting responsible consumption and supporting climate action.
Beyond the recycling plant tour, MTN Ghana has lined up several activities as part of Sustainability Month.
These include a Lunch and Learn session and a Sustainability Workshop for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises aimed at helping business owners integrate sustainability into their operations.
The workshop will focus on practical measures businesses can adopt to improve resource efficiency while creating long-term value.
Employees will also participate in a tree-planting exercise as part of efforts to preserve and restore Ghana’s natural ecosystem.

Sustainability Drive Marks MTN Ghana’s 30 Years
The Sustainability Month programme also forms part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations under the theme, “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You.”
As it marks three decades of operations in Ghana, the telecommunications company is seeking to deepen the integration of environmental sustainability into its business strategy while encouraging employees to become active champions of environmental stewardship.
MTN Ghana said it remains committed to using its operations and influence to create shared value for customers, communities and the country while contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development.
