The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid tribute to its departed comrade, Kwame Dzokoto, by observing a minute’s silence in his memory during a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Accra.
The tribute was led by the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, who called on those present to rise and honour the deceased at the end of his address to the media.
The moment of silence brought an emotional close to the press conference, which focused largely on the party’s preparations for its upcoming constituency executive elections scheduled for October 24 and 25, 2026.
“Before I take my seat, I just want all of us who are here to simply rise. We want to observe a minute of silence in memory of our departed comrade, Kwame Dzokoto,” Mr. Kwetey said.
He subsequently invited attendees to join in paying their respects to the deceased, concluding the tribute with a prayer for his peaceful rest.
The tribute underscored the party’s recognition of the loss of a member of its political family as it continues preparations for a major internal electoral exercise.
NDC prepares for nationwide constituency elections
The press conference also provided an opportunity for the NDC leadership to brief the media on preparations for its constituency executive elections, which will cover all 276 constituencies across Ghana.
Mr Kwetey disclosed that 265 constituencies were scheduled to hold their elections on Saturday, October 24, while the remaining 11 would vote on Sunday, October 25.
He said the party had recorded 16,468 active applications for constituency-level executive positions, with 15,049 submitted and 1,419 remaining in draft form.
The General Secretary stressed that the credibility of the elections was essential to the party’s internal democracy and Ghana’s wider democratic development.
He urged aspirants, delegates, and election officials to conduct themselves responsibly, warning against violence, intimidation, and any attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
The Ghana Police Service, he said, would have sole responsibility for security at the voting centres, while the Electoral Commission of Ghana would conduct and supervise the electoral process with support from the party’s election directors and constituency election committees.
Party calls for unity and peaceful elections
Mr. Kwetey further appealed to party members to prioritise unity over individual ambitions, insisting that competition for leadership positions should not undermine the NDC’s collective interests.
He urged delegates to exercise their voting rights freely, aspirants to respect electoral procedures, and officials to discharge their responsibilities impartially.
Earlier at the same press conference, the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, outlined progress made in the party’s reorganisation, including branch elections and preparations for constituency, regional, and national executive elections.
The NDC’s national executive elections are scheduled for December 19, 2026, while separate youth and women’s elections are planned for December 12 and 13.
The press conference ended with the party’s leadership and attendees observing a minute’s silence for Kwame Dzokoto in a solemn acknowledgement of their departed comrade.
