Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has levelled fresh allegations against Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, accusing him of being part of what he described as a “grand conspiracy” against former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The Effutu MP alleged that the supposed scheme was intended to remove Justice Torkornoo from office and ultimately pave the way for Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to assume the position of Chief Justice.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie morning show, Mr Afenyo-Markin claimed that some Justices of the Supreme Court were aware of the circumstances surrounding the former Chief Justice’s removal.
“He knows, I know, the Supreme Court judges who conspired against their colleague [all know]. Why should I deny that?” he said.
The Minority Leader did not, however, provide evidence during the interview to substantiate his allegations of a conspiracy.
He maintained that the full circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal would eventually become public, insisting that what he described as the “true story” would ultimately vindicate his position.
According to him, developments surrounding the former Chief Justice remain an issue the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intends to revisit should it return to government.
Mr Afenyo-Markin consequently reiterated his position that a future NPP administration should restore Justice Torkornoo to the position of Chief Justice.
“I don’t see why that woman will not be reinstated when the NPP returns to power,” he stated.
His comments add another layer to the political debate surrounding the leadership of Ghana’s Judiciary and the circumstances that led to the change at the office of the Chief Justice.
The allegations against Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie and the unnamed Supreme Court judges remain claims by the Minority Leader, and no evidence establishing the alleged conspiracy was presented in the remarks cited.
