Divine Focus Crowned Champions at 1st Ghana Armed Forces Bowls Championships

The maiden edition of the Ghana Armed Forces Bowls Championships came to a colourful end at the Burma Camp Sports Complex with the Ghana Navy’s Divine Focus team crowned champions after a thrilling final encounter. The Navy side, made up of Tagoe Nii Teiko Seek Theophilus, Wayoe Gabriel Teye and Cudjoe Jonathan, produced a commanding display to defeat the Ghana Army’s Magic Three team of Prince Boateng, Akosua Dzegu and Botchway Seth, bringing the competition to a dramatic close.

The finals were fiercely contested, reflecting the discipline and determination of the Armed Forces teams who battled throughout the tournament. The competition, which was the first of its kind, brought together service men and women to showcase their skills, teamwork and precision in the sport of bowls.

Among the players who stood out was Divine Focus’ Wayoe Gabriel Teye, whose consistent brilliance throughout the tournament earned him the Best Player award. Youngster Genevieve Ntaaga from team Gogerdem also caught the eye with her outstanding talent and was deservedly recognised as the Promising Player of the championship.

The matches were officiated by internationally recognised officials Jeanette Williams and Dirk Malomgre, who were nominated by World Bowls to oversee the games. Their presence gave the maiden competition international credibility and ensured that the contests were conducted to the highest standards.

The occasion itself was graced by Colonel Richard Akoto and Captain Geishon Adase of the Ghana Armed Forces, who together with other dignitaries, presented trophies to the winners and outstanding individuals. Their involvement added prestige to the event and highlighted the Armed Forces’ commitment to promoting emerging sports in Ghana.

The championship also attracted the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who commended the Armed Forces for their initiative in spearheading the development of bowls in Ghana. Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah praised the organisers, noting that the event marked a milestone for Ghana’s sporting calendar. “What we are witnessing here today is a historic step in diversifying Ghana’s sporting landscape. The Armed Forces have shown leadership once again, and the NSA will continue to support initiatives that give opportunities to young talents in less-highlighted sports,” he said.

Also addressing the gathering, Mr. Charles Obeng Amofah, President of the Bowls Federation, expressed his excitement about the success of the championship and called for sustained support for the sport. “This championship marks the beginning of a new chapter for bowls in Ghana. We are determined to make the sport more inclusive and competitive. Seeing the Armed Forces commit resources and talent to this game is a huge encouragement, and we believe bowls will soon gain the recognition it deserves nationally and internationally,” he stated.

As part of his commitment to developing the game further, Mr. Amofah also donated a full set of bowls balls to the Ghana Armed Forces bowls team. The equipment, he explained, would be used for training sessions and preparation towards future competitions, ensuring that the team remains ready to compete at the highest level.

The presentation of trophies brought the championship to a joyful conclusion, with winners and individual awardees receiving recognition for their exceptional efforts. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as Divine Focus lifted the ultimate trophy, affirming the Ghana Navy’s dominance in the competition and setting a standard for future editions.

With the success of the first Armed Forces Bowls Championships, organisers and participants alike are optimistic that the sport will continue to grow, drawing more players and fans into its fold. The event has not only provided a platform for competition but also underscored the values of unity, discipline and excellence that remain at the heart of the Ghana Armed Forces.
