Germany’s Energy Landscape: Fossil Fuels Overtake Renewables

Wind drought pushes coal and gas to provide majority of power in Q1 2025, official data shows

Germany used more electricity from fossil fuels than from renewable sources in the first quarter of the year, official data showed on Friday.

The Federal Statistical Office said 50.5% of electricity in Germany was generated from fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas in the first three months of 2025, up from 41.5% in the same quarter of the previous year.

This was the first three-month period since the first quarter of 2023 to see fossil fuels top renewable sources in German electricity generation.

According to the agency, an “exceptionally windless first quarter” was the main reason for the development.

Wind power remained the single biggest energy source, providing 27.8% of the country’s electricity, but that is lower than the 38.5% in the first quarter of 2024.

Coal was used to fill the gaps, generating 27% of German electricity, up from 23% in the previous year.

Natural gas was third on 20.6%, with solar power on 9.2% and biogas on 6.1%.
