The Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has expressed disappointment over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to annul the constituency executive elections held on July 11, 2026, insisting that the initial exercise was transparent and peaceful.
Speaking after casting his ballot in the re-run election at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, Mr Asenso-Boakye questioned the need for the party’s National Steering Committee to cancel the earlier poll and order a fresh election.
“I am disappointed that we had to come back and do this all over again. The first election was conducted peacefully, just as the ongoing one,” he said.
Despite his reservations, the Bantama MP said he respects the party’s decision and supports the re-run in the interest of party cohesion and discipline.
“Even though I am disappointed, I am also in support of the re-run of the election since it is the party’s decision to re-conduct the election,” he stated.
Mr Asenso-Boakye also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the re-run after touring the three voting centres at the venue.
“I have moved around all the voting centers and I can say that the process so far has been peaceful and transparent. Delegates are voting without any interference,” he said.
Asenso-Boakye Calls for Unity
The MP pledged to work with whoever emerges victorious, stressing that the outcome of the internal election should not undermine unity within the constituency.
He said the party must quickly close ranks after the contest and concentrate on strengthening its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“For me, it’s about party unity. We will all rally behind the winners and work hard for Dr. Bawumia’s victory in 2028,” he added.
Background
The re-run follows a decision by the NPP’s National Steering Committee to annul the July 11 constituency election over reported breaches of party directives and electoral regulations, as well as concerns relating to existing court orders in some instances.
Unlike the initial exercise, the re-run is being supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure compliance with the required electoral procedures.

A total of 1,258 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at the Kumasi Cultural Centre to elect constituency executives who will steer the affairs of the NPP in Bantama ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service have also been deployed to the venue to maintain security and ensure an orderly exercise.
Voting is scheduled to close at 4 p.m., with national and regional executives of the NPP monitoring proceedings to ensure adherence to the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
