The Bulsa community in Accra has taken a significant step towards strengthening traditional leadership, unity and accountability with the inauguration of a Search Committee tasked with facilitating the selection of a Bulsa Nab of Accra.
The inauguration marks an important stage in the community’s efforts to establish a credible, transparent and broadly acceptable leadership selection process, with stakeholders being urged to place collective interests above individual ambitions.
Addressing elders, distinguished members of the Bulsa community and members of the newly inaugurated committee, the Chairman of BulukBisa Club, HW. Seth Aduedem Alafa, described the occasion as an important opportunity to reinforce the values of unity, fairness and responsible leadership.
He said the establishment of the committee reflected the community’s commitment to ensuring that the process of selecting its leader was conducted in a manner that commanded public confidence and upheld the dignity of the Bulsa people in Accra.
“Leadership is not merely about occupying a position; it is about service, integrity, responsibility, and the ability to bring people together for a common purpose,” Mr Alafa stated, setting the tone for an exercise he said must reflect the collective aspirations of the community.
He stressed that the credibility of the process would depend not only on the eventual selection of a leader but also on the fairness, openness and consistency with which the committee discharged its responsibilities.
The BulukBisa Club chairman therefore urged committee members to approach their assignment with impartiality, diligence and a strong sense of duty, emphasising that their conduct would play a decisive role in determining the level of confidence the community placed in the outcome.
He called on the committee to operate strictly within its approved terms of reference, adhere to agreed guidelines and ensure that every eligible person received fair consideration in accordance with the established procedures.
Mr. Alafa further cautioned against conflicts of interest and any conduct that could undermine the integrity of the selection exercise, noting that fairness must be demonstrated in practice and not merely proclaimed as an objective.
“The process must create confidence among our members and produce an outcome that reflects the collective interests of our community,” he emphasised, highlighting the importance of placing the welfare of the Bulsa community at the centre of the exercise.
Beyond the committee’s technical responsibilities, the chairman underscored the importance of patience, consultation and mutual respect, acknowledging that differences of opinion could emerge during a process involving leadership and community representation.
He urged members to handle disagreements constructively and through the appropriate channels, warning implicitly against allowing competing views to become a source of division within the community.
According to him, objections and appeals arising at any stage must be addressed fairly and in accordance with the applicable procedures before the process advances to the next stage. Such an approach, he noted, would help protect the legitimacy of the exercise and strengthen acceptance of its eventual outcome.
Mr. Alafa also appealed to the wider Bulsa community to cooperate with the committee and allow its members the necessary space to perform their duties without undue pressure or interference.
He maintained that the responsibility for a successful leadership selection exercise did not rest with the committee alone, but also required the understanding, restraint and active cooperation of the people whose interests the process was intended to serve.
“Our shared objective should be to conduct a peaceful, credible, and orderly process that preserves the unity and dignity of the Bulsa Community,” he said, urging community members to remain committed to a common purpose throughout the exercise.
The chairman further drew attention to the importance of effective planning and communication, particularly as the committee works within an approved 90-day period to complete its assignment.
He encouraged members to establish clear priorities, organise their activities carefully and work diligently towards the agreed milestones, stressing that timely completion must go hand in hand with fairness and procedural integrity.
While acknowledging the importance of meeting the deadline, his message placed equal emphasis on the quality of the process, making clear that speed should not come at the expense of consultation, due process or the confidence of community members.
The selection of a Bulsa Nab of Accra carries significance beyond the filling of a leadership position. For a community seeking to preserve its identity and strengthen its collective voice in the capital, the exercise presents an opportunity to reinforce social cohesion, cultural continuity and effective community representation.
A credible traditional leadership structure can provide a focal point for consultation, dispute resolution, cultural preservation and engagement with public institutions, while helping to mobilise members around shared developmental priorities. The extent to which these responsibilities are fulfilled, however, depends in part on the confidence and legitimacy established through the selection process.
Mr. Alafa consequently challenged the committee and the wider community to measure success by more than the announcement of a new leader. He said the lasting value of the exercise would be reflected in the extent to which it strengthened trust, cooperation and unity among Bulsa people in Accra.
“The success of this exercise will not be measured only by the announcement of a new leader, but also by the fairness of the process and the extent to which it strengthens trust, unity, and cooperation among us,” he stated.
He congratulated the members of the Search Committee on their appointment and expressed confidence that they would approach the assignment with the wisdom, courage and commitment required to fulfil their mandate.
As the committee begins its work within the stipulated 90 day period, the immediate challenge will be to translate the principles outlined at the inauguration into a transparent and orderly process that the community can trust.
For the Bulsa community, the inauguration represents both an administrative milestone and an opportunity to demonstrate that leadership selection can be guided by consultation, accountability and respect for collective interests. The ultimate test will be whether the exercise delivers not only a new Bulsa Nab of Accra, but also a stronger foundation for unity and progress.
