Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has defended his decision to engage in plea negotiations with the State over matters relating to an EXIM Bank facility, describing the move as a lawful and responsible effort to resolve the issue.
In a statement issued by the Wontumi Campaign’s Director of Media and Communications, Ewuradjoa Coleman, the campaign said the financial facility was secured to support a large-scale agricultural enterprise aimed at enhancing Ghana’s food security, creating jobs and boosting agricultural development.
According to the statement, the project was a legitimate farming venture and not a speculative undertaking. It noted that Chairman Wontumi’s contributions to agriculture have previously received national recognition.
The statement recalled that in 2018, Wontumi’s farming enterprise was named Ashanti Regional Best Farmer, First Runner-Up, during the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration. His 10,000-acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District was cited as a major contribution to agricultural production.
The campaign, however, acknowledged that large-scale agricultural investments are often exposed to risks including adverse weather conditions, market fluctuations and production challenges, which can affect expected returns and the ability to meet financial obligations.
It said Wontumi’s decision to enter plea negotiations demonstrates a commitment to the rule of law, transparency and the efficient resolution of outstanding legal and commercial matters.
The statement further stressed that plea negotiations are recognised under Ghanaian law and should not automatically be interpreted as an admission of guilt or wrongdoing. It noted that the legal framework allows parties to negotiate settlements, which may in some circumstances result in the withdrawal of charges.
“The decision should be viewed as a responsible effort to resolve a commercial and legal matter within the framework of the law while avoiding unnecessary and prolonged litigation,” the statement said.
The campaign also urged the public to respect due process and avoid politicising legal procedures, arguing that seeking a lawful resolution should be seen as an act of responsibility rather than an attempt to evade accountability.

It maintained that Chairman Wontumi remains committed to meeting his obligations and contributing to national development through agriculture and public service.
The statement comes amid ongoing public discussion regarding Wontumi’s legal challenges and his decision to pursue negotiations with the State.
