Newly elected Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Elvis Awonekai Figo Atiah, has declared his intention to challenge the National Democratic Congress’ dominance in the region and transform the Upper East into a stronghold of the NPP.
Mr Atiah, the immediate past Upper East Regional Secretary of the NPP, says his leadership will focus on rebuilding the party from the grassroots, strengthening its structures and mobilising support across the region.
He secured 177 votes out of a total of 302 votes cast to defeat two other contenders in the regional executive election held on August 15 at the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs.
Following his victory, Mr Atiah served notice that the NPP would aggressively work to expand its electoral support and loosen what has historically been the NDC’s strong grip on the region.
He argued that despite the NDC’s significant political representation in the Upper East Region, the governing party had failed to translate that support into adequate development for residents.
According to him, the NDC has lost touch with the people, creating an opportunity for the NPP to present itself as a credible alternative capable of advancing the development aspirations of the region.

Mr Atiah expressed confidence that his experience as Regional Secretary, coupled with what he described as strong leadership and grassroots mobilisation skills, would help reorganise the NPP and position it for greater electoral success.
He pledged to unite the party and strengthen its presence across constituencies as the NPP prepares for future electoral contests.
The regional executive election was conducted peacefully and successfully.
