MTN Ghana Commits US$2m to One Million Coders Programme

Investment targets youth digital skills development and supports Ghana’s national digital transformation agenda

MTN Ghana has announced a US$2 million contribution to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations in support of the Government of Ghana’s flagship One Million Coders Programme, a key initiative aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation and empowering the youth with future-ready skills.

The funding will support the training of one million Ghanaians in coding and other digital competencies, equipping young people to participate effectively in the digital economy and contribute to national development.

The contribution follows earlier commitments made by MTN Group Chief Executive Officer, Ralph Mupita, and the company’s Vice President for Ghana, Southern and East Africa, Ebenezer Asante, alongside MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, during engagements with the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations on the sidelines of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last year. The discussions focused on strengthening public–private collaboration to build Africa’s digital capacity, unlock innovation, and create inclusive economic opportunities through technology.

Speaking on the motivation behind the support, MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett said youth empowerment remains a core priority for the company.

“Africa has the youngest population in the world, presenting Ghana with a unique opportunity to equip its youth with future-fit digital skills. Through our support for the One Million Coders Programme, we are creating pathways for young people to acquire new skills, embrace innovation, and access opportunities in the digital economy. When we invest in our youth, we invest in the long-term prosperity and sustainability of our nation,” he stated.

He added that digital skills development aligns with MTN’s belief that technology should be a force for good, driving inclusive growth and shared value.

The One Million Coders Programme, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, is a major pillar of Ghana’s digitalisation agenda. It seeks to build a robust pool of digital talent to support public-sector modernisation, private-sector growth, entrepreneurship, and job creation. By expanding access to coding and software development skills, the initiative is expected to enhance productivity, stimulate innovation, and strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

MTN Ghana’s support for the programme aligns with MTN Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, particularly its focus on digital inclusion, education, and youth development. Digital skills development remains central to the company’s ambition to ensure communities are not left behind in an increasingly digital world.

Beyond this investment, MTN Ghana continues to make significant contributions to the country’s ICT ecosystem. The company is collaborating with the Government of Ghana to establish a US$25 million ICT Centre that will serve as a hub for innovation, skills training, and digital collaboration.

Additionally, the MTN Ghana Foundation continues to support several digital education and ICT-focused initiatives nationwide, including the Ministry’s Girls in ICT programme, reinforcing the company’s commitment to education, digital capability development, and community empowerment.

These investments underscore MTN Ghana’s long-standing commitment to national development, leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to drive digital transformation, empower the youth, and support sustainable socio-economic growth.
