Ghana Airways is expected to return to the skies in 2027, with a direct flight route between Ghana and Canada planned as its first major service, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
Mr Ablakwa disclosed this during an engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Ottawa, Canada, where he said preparations to revive the defunct national airline were progressing.
According to the Minister, President John Dramani Mahama has established a technical committee to develop a plan for the airline’s revival, and the committee has submitted its report.
He also revealed that the President held a meeting with Boeing’s management last month as part of efforts to advance the project.
“President Mahama is passionate that the pride of Ghana, the wings of Ghana which flew in the skies and made all of us proud until the early 2000s; President Mahama has put together a technical committee. They have submitted their report. Last month, he had a good meeting with the management of Boeing and I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target that next year, 2027, we should have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” Mr Ablakwa said.
The Minister added that the government had identified key routes to be reserved for the revived airline, with direct flights between Ghana and Canada expected to receive priority.
He said the proposed route would strengthen air connectivity between the two countries and improve travel options for Ghanaians living in Canada.
“President Mahama has identified some routes that we need to reserve for Ghana Airways and he says that I should let you know that the Ghana-Canada route, which will be the first direct flight to Canada,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
The proposed revival would mark a significant development in Ghana’s efforts to re-establish a national airline following the collapse of the former Ghana Airways, which ceased operations in 2004.
Although the government is targeting a 2027 relaunch, further details on the airline’s ownership structure, fleet, financing and operational arrangements have yet to be outlined in the Minister’s remarks.
If realised, the plan would restore Ghana Airways to the aviation sector and potentially establish a direct air link between Ghana and Canada as part of its initial operations.
