ECOWAS Warns Against Breach of Venezuela’s Sovereignty, Calls for Restraint
West African bloc aligns with African Union, urges respect for international law and inclusive dialogue in Venezuela.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, urging restraint and respect for international law.
In a statement, ECOWAS acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, but stressed that such actions must not undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations.
The bloc reminded the international community of its obligations under international law, particularly Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the political independence of any state.
ECOWAS said it fully aligns with the African Union’s statement issued on January 3, 2026, which called for calm and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela as tensions persist.
