Ghana has commended a group of countries for supporting its landmark United Nations resolution that formally characterises the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic advocacy.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed appreciation to China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates for backing the resolution at the UN.
In a social media statement on Tuesday, April 14, the Minister said the vote reflected growing international consensus on the historical injustice of the transatlantic slave trade and represented a diplomatic win for Ghana’s foreign policy engagement.
He noted that he had received envoys from the supporting countries, including ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from Asia, the Caribbean, and the Gulf region, during a formal engagement in Accra.
The meeting brought together representatives such as China’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, Cuba’s Ambassador H.E. Julio Enrique Pujol Torres, and senior diplomats from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
