Silence No More! Revolutionary Self-Defence and Empowerment Campaign Gives Voice to Women and Girls in Ghana

How the ‘Silence No More’ Campaign Is Transforming Lives Through Survivor Skills & Community Action

In a bold move to challenge silence and foster change, Inspire Her Ghana has launched the revolutionary “Silence No More” campaign across communities in the North East Region of Ghana.

This transformative initiative aims to combat sexual violence, end the heartbreaking crisis of “sex-for-pads” exploitation, and empower marginalized women and girls to reclaim their dignity, safety, and independence.

A Movement Rooted in Community, Empowering Lives

With generous support from the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), “Silence No More” has reached far beyond just the towns of Yagaba and Sooba, extending its impact across multiple communities in the Mamprugu Moagduri and West Mamprusi districts.

This wide-reaching effort is a rallying cry for justice, education, and resilience, targeting adolescent girls, women survivors of abuse, girls with disabilities, and youth, truly making their voices heard.

Breaking the Silence through Education and Empowerment

From March to May 2025, Inspire Her Ghana orchestrated a series of life-changing activities designed to educate, protect, and empower:

Community Engagement & Awareness Talks (March 7-11)
Across various local communities, sessions centered on critical issues like sexual violence, consent, menstrual dignity, and the urgent need to end transactional sex in exchange for menstrual products. Community members, traditional leaders, and youth leaders engaged openly, fostering a collective commitment to change.

Self-Defence & Survivor Empowerment Training (March 26-30)
Survivors and vulnerable girls received vital self-defence skills and emotional resilience training.

This phase was about more than physical protection; it was about helping survivors rebuild confidence, regain control, and stand tall against unsafe environments.

Skills Development: Reusable Pad Making & Beadwork (May 1-2)
In the final phase, girls with disabilities, adolescent mothers, and survivors learned to craft reusable pads and beads—equipping them with practical skills to generate income and sustain independence. This hands-on training is a powerful step toward economic empowerment and menstrual dignity.

Impact That Speaks Volumes

Over 500 girls and women have experienced the dawn of hope through this campaign. Not only have they been equipped with survival and self-defence skills, but they’ve also found safe spaces to share their stories, confront stigma, and blossom into resilient survivors.

The “Silence No More” campaign is more than a program—it’s a movement towards a future where silence is shattered, and voices are uplifted.

Moving Forward

Inspire Her Ghana’s relentless work in rural Northern Ghana demonstrates that when communities are educated, empowered, and supported, real change becomes possible.

The fight against sexual violence and exploitation of women and girls is ongoing, but this campaign proves that with collective effort and courageous advocacy, silence will no longer triumph.
