The Ghana national football team has appointed seasoned Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach in a major reset aimed at steering the team towards a strong campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, who has managed top sides including Manchester United and Real Madrid, is expected to immediately take charge of preparations for the tournament to be staged in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Proven World Cup experience
The veteran coach brings extensive World Cup pedigree, having previously guided South Africa’s qualification campaign for the 2002 tournament and leading Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010. He also took charge of Iran during the 2014 and 2018 editions, cementing his reputation as one of football’s most experienced international managers.
Queiroz has also worked across several continents, including coaching roles in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, giving him broad tactical and developmental experience.
Immediate focus on 2026 preparations
He is expected to begin work immediately as Ghana intensifies preparations for the global showpiece scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026.
The Black Stars will open their group campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in what is expected to be a highly competitive Group stage.

The appointment signals a clear intent by the Ghana Football Association to rebuild and strengthen the national team ahead of the tournament, relying on Queiroz’s experience in international competition to guide the squad through a challenging group.
